Blocked Bathroom Drain

Blocked bathroom drains are very common plumbing issues in houses all over Auckland. The bathroom plumbing system is a network of pipes, connected to toilets, showers, bathtubs, sinks and others! Each of these fixtures is connected to an external point.

Why is my bathroom drain blocked?

Blocked bathroom drains can become blocked by a variety of causes. Some of the most common factors include the wrong size diameter pipework, location, amount of pipework connections and age which can result in your bathroom drains to become blocked. We often find the number one cause of blocked drains is an obstruction in the pipework.

Every fixture in your bathroom will connect onto the main drain. If you have a blockage the first thing you should do is determine whether the blockage is limited to one fixture or if it is affecting the entire system. This will help diagnose the location of the problem.

Toilet

Your toilet can become blocked by a number of different obstructions, one of the most common we are called out to is using too much toilet paper on one single flush which will block the toilet. Many other blocked toilet causes can include:

  1. Sanitary Pads
  2. Facial Wipes
  3. Children’s Toys
  4. Clothing
  5. Towels
  6. Wet wipes
  7. Cell phones
  8. Cotton balls
  9. Hair
  10. Kitty litter
  11. Toilet cleaners/ brushes heads

Bathtub or shower

Hair is the most common blockage we find. The long hair strands make it halfway through the water trap and catch soap/ dirt particles as they pass which then sitck to the hair and turns it into a thick wick. This blockage will build up over time as it will change from a slow draining waste into a frustrating blocked one. Ask one of our friendly KD Plumbing staff to send a local plumber to unblock yours today.

Hand basin

Hair and toothpaste will build up over time in your hand basin waste pipework and become partially blocked which is similar to what happens in your shower and bath drains. The hair sits in the bottom of the trap and when combined with passing toothpaste they stick together, eventually closing up the entire pipe diameter and completely blocking it which will require a local plumber straight away.

Several blocked drains at once

Your plumbing system is made up of a network of twisting and bending pipework which are all potential areas for an obstruction to occur. If one point of this pipework becomes obstructed then it may only affect one fixture or it could be the junction to other fixtures and cause them to block up too. With a single fixture we can often remove the trap and clean that individually.

In the unfortunate case when multiple drains are blocked, there is a high likelihood that you have a blockage downstream within the pipe work that joins the drains together. If this is the case then you should call KD Plumbing and ask for our blocked drain clearing service.
