My toilet is blocked. Why?

Blocked toilets happen because on an obstruction in the pipe. Some people don’t even realise they have a partial blockage until suddenly nothing will flush away. Sometimes a blockage happens immediately while others will clog up over a period of time.

Blockages that happen immediately are identified by water rapidly rising in the bowl and not flushing away down the drain when the toilet is flushed. This type of blockage is generally located within the toilet trap.

A blockage that has slowly built up over time will have a similar effect in that the water will fill to the top of the bowl but will drain away a lot slower than usual when the toilet is flushed. This type of blockage can be located within the toilet trap too however, they can also be further down the pipework and be affecting other bathroom fixtures.
